Chapter Two - MY FAMILY

In our second chapter, students become family history detectives. They'll trace their ancestors' journeys and discover traditional Jewish recipes and foods. Using AI technology, they'll experience what daily life was like for a child their age in their family's hometown 100 years ago.

Intro Video - 'Ovrim Dira' (Moving Day)

  • "Ovrim Dira" captures the chaotic energy of moving day as a multi-generational family packs their belongings amid the flurry of activity.

  • Through a poignant conversation between grandfather and grandson, the film contrasts the immigrant experience of moving to America with the contemporary relocation to New Jersey, highlighting how different generations perceive the significance of changing homes.

  • This film provides an excellent starting point for our discussions about family history, intergenerational relationships, and the journeys that have defined Jewish families throughout time.

This activity builds on the family tree students created earlier.

  • If a student adds the United States for a grandparent, they'll be prompted to consider where their ancestors lived before coming to America.

  • Students can select "Unknown" if they don't know where a family member was born.

  • The "My Story" page shows a map of their family's origins, with tabs they can click to learn more about each country.
